The project views the museum not as a self-contained building, but as a living part of the public space. The new façade structure resembles a delicate fabric that incorporates transparency, light and movement, translating the history of the site into a contemporary form. Rather than dominating the existing building, the extension establishes its own dialogue with the existing architecture. This creates a distinctive identity that reinforces the Textile Museum’s status as a cultural attraction in St. Gallen, far beyond its function as an exhibition venue.
The delicate façade structure lends the historic building a new presence within the urban landscape. Depending on the light, the weather and the viewing angle, its appearance changes, creating a dynamic façade that does not obscure the existing building but rather showcases it in a new light. The result is a striking appearance that allows the Textile Museum to be experienced even from the public space.
The corner of the building becomes a striking landmark within the urban landscape. Delicate vertical elements extend the historic façade upwards and feature luminous lettering that directly translates the theme of textiles into the architecture. This creates a striking introduction that makes the museum’s location recognisable even from a distance.
The main entrance forms the tranquil centrepiece of the project and creates a seamless transition between the city and the museum. The historic portal architecture is preserved and reinterpreted through carefully considered interventions.
